Syrian President Bashar al-Asad on Saturday said Israel did not want a settlement with Syria.
"Israel is not ready for successful mediation because successful mediation brings peace and peace is something that Israel does not want," al-Asad told reporters in a joint press meeting with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul in Istanbul's Ciragan Palace.
The Syrian leader said his country was loyal to Turkey's mediation in indirect talks with Israel and he thanked the Turkish prime minister for his efforts to extend aid to Gaza and for the removal Israeli embargo on the region.
Over Iran's nuclear program, Asad said any country could use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. "We want to see that the Middle East is free of any weapons of mass destruction," he said.
Asad said Arab countries had developed a great interest for Turkey over the last years, which he said was strengthened by the formation of Turkish-Arab Council and the participation of Turkey in the Arab Summit.
