People Who Pass Away While on Hajj and ‘Umrah - III

Ibn ‘Umar may Allah be pleased with them said,

I was sitting with the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) in the mosque of Mina when a man from Al-Ansaar and another from Thaqeef came to him. They greeted the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) and he greeted them back. They said, 'O Messenger of Allah; we came to ask you some questions.' The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: 'If you want I can inform you why you came and what you want to ask, and I will do so, and if you want I will hold back and you can ask me and I will answer you.' They said, 'Tell us, O Messenger of Allah!” The man from Thaqeef said to the man from Al-Ansaar, 'Ask.' So, he asked, 'Inform me, O Messenger of Allah!'

The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: 'You came to me to ask about leaving your house and heading for Al-Masjid Al-Haram and the reward for it; about praying two Rak‘ahs after Tawaaf and the reward for it; going between As-Safa and Al-Marwah and the reward for it; your standing at ‘Arafah and the reward for it; stoning the Jamaraat and the reward for it; slaughtering the Hady (sacrificial animal) and the reward for it; and the Tawaaf of Al-Ifaadhah.' The man said, “I swear by the One Who sent you with the truth! This is what I came to ask you about.'

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: 'As for you leaving your home and heading for Al-Masjid Al-Haram, your she-camel does not place its foot nor does it raise it except that Allah writes for you a reward due to it and wipes off one of your sins. As for the two Rak‘ahs after the Tawaaf, it is equivalent to freeing a slave from the Children of Ismaa‘eel (Ishmael). As for your circuiting of As-Safa and Al-Marwah, it is the same as freeing 70 slaves.

As for your staying till the evening in ‘Arafah, Allah descends to the sky of this world and He boasts about you to the Angels, Saying: ‘My slaves have come to Me, looking rough, from every deep valley hoping for My mercy, so if your sins were equivalent to the amount of sand or the drops of rain or like the foam on the sea I will forgive them. So go forth My slaves! Having forgiveness and for what or who you have interceded for.’ As for throwing the pebbles, for every stone that you throw, it removes one of the major destructive sins. As for your slaughtering, it is saved for you with your Lord. As for shaving your head, there is a reward for every hair that you shaved, and a sin is wiped off by it. As for you performing Tawaaf of the House after all this, then by this time you are performing Tawaaf with no sin upon you and an Angel comes and places his hand between your shoulders saying: 'Perform good deeds in what you face of the future for verily your past sins have been forgiven.’” [At-Tabaraani, Al-Bazzaar and Ibn Hibbaan, with a trustworthy chain of narrators] The exact wording of the narration will be cited in the chapter on standing on ‘Arafaat on the last pages of At-Targheeb fi Al-Wuqoof, Allah willing.

‘Ubaadah ibn As-Saamit may Allah be pleased with him narrated the same Hadeeth with a different wording. It reads, “The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said:

As for you leaving your home heading for Al-Masijid Al-Haram, you and your she-camel do not place a foot nor do you raise it except that Allah writes for you a reward due to it, and wipes off one of your sins. As for you staying until the evening in ‘Arafah, Allah Says to His angels: ‘My angels; What brought my slaves here?' The angels would say, 'O Lord; they have come to You seeking and hoping for Your mercy and Paradise.' Allah The Exalted would Say (to the angels): 'I make Myself and My creation (angels) witnesses that I have forgiven them even if their sins were equivalent to the amount of sand or the drops of rain or like the foam on the sea I will forgive them. As for throwing the pebbles; Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.} [Quran 32:17] As for shaving your head, each hair that falls to the ground will be light for you on the Day of Resurrection. As for you performing the Farewell Tawaaf of the House, you come out of your sins as you were on the day your mother gave birth to you.” [At-Taabraani in Al-Awsat] [Hasan for others]

Abu Hurayrah may Allah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said:

Whoever sets out for Hajj and dies, the reward of the one who performs Hajj is written for him until the Day of Resurrection, and whoever sets out for ‘Umrah and dies, the reward of the one who performs ‘Umrah is written for him until the Day of Resurrection, and whoever sets out to fight for the cause of Allah and dies, the reward of the one who fights for the cause of Allah is written for him until the Day of Resurrection.” [Abu Ya‘la on the authority of Muhammad ibn Is-haaq and the rest of the narrators are trustworthy] [Saheeh due to others]

Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allah be pleased with them narrated that a man who was standing next to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) on ‘Arafaat, fell down from his mount and broke his neck (and died). The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: “Wash him with water and Sidr and shroud him in two pieces of cloth and neither perfume him nor cover his head, for Allah will resurrect him on the Day of Resurrection reciting Talbiyah (saying 'Labbayk’).” [Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and Ibn Khuzaymah]

The same Hadeeth was reported with a different wording that reads, “A man fell from his mount and died while he was with the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) in the state of Ihraam. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: “Wash him with water and Sidr and shroud him in two pieces of cloth and neither perfume him nor cover his head, for he will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection saying, 'Labbayk'.

Imam Muslim’s version reads, “The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) ordered them to wash him with water and Sidr and to keep his face uncovered – and perhaps he said his face and head – for he will be resurrected saying Talbiyah.
