German Tour Bus Crash Kills 28 in France
A German tour bus overturned on a French highway in heavy rain early Saturday, killing at least 28 of the 74 people on board, officials said. Some 46 other passengers - all of whom were believed to be German - were injured, four of them seriously, said Col. Serge Delaigue, the regional director of fire rescue services. The bus carried 72 passengers and two drivers. Officials initially believed 77 people were on board. One of the drivers was confirmed dead. The bus ran off the highway north of the city of Lyon, about 230 miles southeast of Paris, at about 5 a.m., hitting an embankment and electrical pole before flipping over onto its roof. The highway was closed to traffic as ambulances and firefighters rushed to the bus. French television footage showed rescue workers trying to free trapped passengers. The injured were taken to hospitals. It was not immediately clear whether there were other factors beside the heavy rain that may have contributed to the crash. One witness told RTL radio that he thought the bus had been going too fast. The bus was registered in Germany and belonged to the Tiger Reisen travel company. The bus had toured throughout Germany and was headed toward Spain. Some of the passengers, most of whom came from Cologne and Hanover, had won the trip as a prize in a contest. **PHOTO CAPTION*** The debris of a German tour bus by the highway north of the city of Lyon, about 230 miles southeast of Paris, Saturday, May 17, 2003.
