Gas Explosion Kills 10 in Turkish School
Ten people were killed and 13 injured after a gas explosion ripped through a Qur'anic school dormitory in central Turkey overnight. The explosion, which was apparently accidental, caused the building in Kayseri, some 250 kilometers southwest of Ankara, to collapse, CNN-Turk television reported Friday. CNN-Turk said there were 23 people inside at the time. All of the bodies pulled from the debris were students, according to the station, which broadcast pictures of the rescue operation. Earlier reports said school employees were among the dead. All of the injured, who included a teacher, were hospitalized, reported the Anatolia news agency. Three people have been detained in connection with the explosion -- the school cook and two gas canister suppliers, according to television reports. Filling makeshift containers with combustible gas is a common practice in Turkey. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Turkish rescue workers try to help two students trapped under the wreckage of a dormitory building of a Muslim religious school in the central Turkish city of Kayseri June 20, 2003.
