Two US Soldiers, 10 Iraqis Wounded in University Blast
Ten Iraqis and two US soldiers have been wounded in a grenade blast targeting occupation forces beside an Islamic college on a campus of Baghdad university, witnesses and military sources said. Two of the wounded included a driver and a cameraman for the Al-Jazeera satellite news channel on campus to interview a Muslim US soldier, said Lieutenant Colonel John Kem, from the First Armoured Division. The attack on the campus in the mixed Sunni and Shiite Muslim quarter of Bab al-Muazam occurred as construction workers were carrying furniture into the university's college of Islamic law, said a witness. "There were 30 workers carrying beds and furniture when someone tossed a grenade from the building at US troops, but it hit us instead," said Samir Hato, a driver for the school. An 11-year-old child was among the wounded, Hato added. The two soldiers had been helping bring in the furniture when the grenade was tossed, said Kem. US troops had sealed off the building, while a female student said she saw a man lob the grenade. The entrance of the Bab al-Muazam campus was the scene of the fatal shooting of British freelance journalist Richard Wild last month. **Calm Returns to Streets of Basra*** Calm is returning to the streets of Iraq's second city Basra, after it was rocked by violent demonstrations on Saturday. Four Iraqis and seven British soldiers were injured when anger over fuel and power shortages reached boiling point. British troops donned riot gear and witnesses said they fired into the air to keep a crowd back from a petrol station. Two Iraqis were apparently hit by rubber bullets. It was some of the most widespread violence seen in the southern city since Saddam Hussein was toppled four months ago. The mainly British local authority issued a statement blaming shortages on smugglers, looters and saboteurs. **PHOTO CAPTION*** A U.S. Army 1st Armored Division soldier stands guard outside a Baghdad University housing complex Monday, July 28, 2003, in Baghdad, Iraq (AP Photo/Manish Swarup)
