Palestinian Killed in Bethlehem, New Raids in Ramallah
One Palestinian was killed by Israeli occupation soldiers in Bethlehem. The Israeli officials said he was holding a knife. But Palestinian eyewitnesses described the incident, which took place near an Israeli army roadblock, as a cold-blooded murder. Meanwhile, the Zionist army has tightened collective punitive measures against Palestinian civilians throughout the West Bank. **Raids in Ramallah*** Israeli occupation troops, backed by tanks and armored personnel carriers, stormed downtown Ramallah Wednesday, signaling the continuation of an Israeli military campaign against Palestinian population centers. Palestinian sources said Zionist forces raided a building in which Supporters of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the sources said at least ten people were arrested in the raid. **Arafat Says He Will Move against Groups if Israel Ends Assassinations*** Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat on Wednesday said he would move to stop all attacks by Palestinian resistance groups against Israeli occupation targets if the Zionist regime stopped the current spate of assassination against Palestinian activists. On Wednesday Arafat called on all Palestinian resistance groups to reinstate a cease-fire which was formally broken off last week after Israel's assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Abu Shanab. A statement from his office read: "President Yasser Arafat calls upon all the Palestinian factions to reiterate their commitment to the truce to give a chance to international peace efforts to implement the road map which the Israeli government refuses to abide by." "I am prepared to implement the law [against militants] on condition Israel stops its attacks," Arafat told the press. He did not, however, elaborate on what steps he would take. He did say though that he wouldn't do anything that could lead to a civil war among Palestinians. In the meanwhile, the Palestinian legislative council is due to convene to discuss the performance of the Palestinian government, headed by Mahmoud Abbas. Observers in Palestine have suggested that the government is standing on a shaky ground, having failed to stop Israeli attacks on Palestinian towns and acts of murder targeting Palestinian political leaders. The Israeli government said Wednesday it wouldn't recognize any new Palestinian government, which Arafat might form in case the present Abbas government collapsed. **PHOTO CAPTION*** A Palestinian youth throws stones at an Israeli tank during clashes in the West Bank city of Jenin August 27, 2003.
