Islamic Jihad Member Shot Dead, Palestinian Girl Dies in Gaza, Shalom to Expel Arafat
An Islamic Jihad activist was shot dead by Israeli troops, south of the West Bank city of Jenin. The man was identified as Abd al-Qader Dahani, Palestinian officials said. According to an Israeli report, the Palestinian was shot during an operations next to the village of Fahma. Israeli soldiers stopped the vehicle in order to check it, when one of the passengers got out of the car and drew a gun. He was shot and killed at the scene, another Palestinian was arrested. But Palestinian security sources claims that Abd al-Qader was unarmed, and was killed in cold blood by Israeli soldiers. Earlier in the day, an 11-year-old Palestinian girl died of her injuries sustained last week in an Israeli missile strike against a Hamas member, hospital officials said. Sana Daour became the third victim of the attack, which killed two other bystanders, but missed its target, Hassan Masoud. **Israel Defense Minister Threatens to Expel Arafat*** Having declared all-out war on the Palestinian Hamas movement, Israel threatened to expel Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as hopes plummeted that the "roadmap" plan for peace would achieve its goals. Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told military radio that the government would now consider expelling Palestinian Authority Chairman Arafat as he was an obstacle to the peace process. "Arafat is a very major obstacle for Mahmud Abbas and for the whole political process," he said Tuesday. "We made a historic mistake by not expelling him two years ago but we are going to address this issue in the short-term, without doubt before the end of the year." Mofaz said the government had to "find the right moment" before making such a move without damaging the more moderate Abbas. But Mofaz's remarks were slammed by Palestinian spokesman Saeb Erekat. "It is very obvious that the Israeli government is treating the Palestinian Authority as something from the past and I believe things are deteriorating faster than a speeding bullet," he said. "I believe things are going from bad to worse and we have not seen the worst yet." The war of words broke out as Palestinians laid to rest the latest Hamas activist to be killed in one of Israel's targeted track and kill operations. Monday's strike in Gaza City was the Jewish state's sixth missile attack since a Palestinian bomb attack on August 19. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Palestinians look through the window of a Red Cross ambulance at the body of Abed al-Kader Dahani in the West Bank town of Jenin Tuesday Sept. 2, 2003.
