Shaikh Ahmad Yassin Wounded in Zionist Missile Strike
Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmad Yassin was injured in his right shoulder in a Zionist raid, Palestinian security and medical sources revealed. Shaikh Yassin, a co-founder of Hamas, has been treated in hospital. The paraplegic, wheelchair-bound, 67-year-old was visiting an acquaintance in downtown Gaza with Hamas political leader Ismail Hanieh when the apartment they were in was hit by Israeli warplanes, Hanieh told the Qatar-based satellite Al-Jazera television on Saturday. Hanieh, who was not hurt in the raid, vowed to avenge "Israel's assassination attempt". "We tell Sharon that if he thinks that by sending his F-16 and even by assassinating Sheikh Yassin or any other Palestinian leader, he can intimidate Hamas or make it renounce jihad, he is mistaken," he told Al-Jazira. "Those assassinations will only reinforce the determination of the Palestinian people and their commitment to the resistance," he added. The flat, located on the second floor of a building in Gaza's residential Al-Rimal neighborhood, was badly damaged in the blast. Another 17 people, most of them women and children, were also wounded in the raid, Palestinian medics said. Hanieh said they were visiting Marwan Abu Ras, a professor at Gaza's Islamic University who was slightly injured in the legs. He insisted missiles had been fired by F-16 warplanes while residents said helicopters had struck the flat. **PHOTO CAPTION*** An injured baby is taken out of the Shifa hospital in Gaza city after being treated Saturday Sept. 6, 2003.
