Zionist Air Strike Kills Two, Wounds Hamas Leader Mahmoud Al-Zahhar
An Israeli missile strike wounded a political leader of the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas, killed his adult son and a bodyguard in the Gaza Strip, medics said. The Hamas official, Mahmoud al-Zahhar, had been standing in the doorway of his two-story house in Gaza City when it was attacked. He was thrown out by the blast and slightly wounded in the back of his head and his back, Hamas members said. Zahhar's wife was among about 20 people wounded, the medics said. They said she was seriously hurt. The attack, which devastated the house, followed two Hamas bomb attacks in the Jewish State, which killed at least 15 people Tuesday. Thousands of Palestinians took to the streets of Gaza in protest after the attack, which witnesses said was carried out by an Israeli warplane. They called for revenge and chanted "Death to Israel!" Palestinian rescue workers were looking for more bodies in the wreckage of the house. Witnesses said there were two bodies at the morgue, and confirmed they were those of a bodyguard aged about 30 and Zahhar's eldest son, Khaled, who is in his 20s. **Four Palestinians, Including Boy, Killed in Israeli Bombing in Khalil*** Israeli occupation troops attacked with heavy machine gun and short-range rockets a multistory building in downtown Hebron, killing at least four Palestinians, including a child. Eyewitnesses said Zionist forces surrounded a seven-story building in the Abu Kteileh neighborhood early on Tuesday after receiving word that armed men were hiding in the building. The troops then began showering the building with heavy machine gun fire, killing two youngsters and a 12-year-old child and moderately injuring a second child. The murdered child was identified Thaer al Suyouri. There was no word as to the identity of the other three victims. Another Palestinian was seriously wounded and transferred to hospital. In the northern West Bank, Israeli occupation troops backed by tanks and armored vehicles invaded the town of Tulkarm and the adjacent refugee camp. Palestinian sources said the invading forces imposed a tight curfew on tens of thousands of Palestinians and carried out house-to-house searches for weapons and "wanted elements," an allusion to Palestinian freedom fighters. At least one Palestinian, a man in his mid 40s, was reportedly injured by Zionist bullets. Meanwhile, the hawkish Zionist minister of war, Shaul Mofaz, warned on Tuesday that the Zionist regime wouldn't cooperate with the newly- appointed Palestinian premier Ahmed Qrei. The Israeli press quoted Mofaz, who Palestinians view as a war criminal, as saying that "anybody taking orders from (Palestinian Leader Yasser) Arafat won't be acceptable to Israel." **Sharon is Greeted by Protests in India*** Thousands of people took to the streets in major Indian cities yesterday to protest a landmark trip by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon but police foiled attempts to disrupt the Jewish leader's visit. Protests were staged in New Delhi, where Sharon was holding talks yesterday with Indian leaders, and in the western city of Bombay, where he will travel tomorrow, the last day of his visit. Demonstrations were also held in the cities of Madras, Bhopal, Guwahati and Calcutta, witnesses said. In New Delhi, some 2,000 Communists carrying banners and placards tried to march up to the Israeli embassy, shouting anti-Sharon slogans. "Butcher Sharon, go back, go back," screamed the protesters from various Indian Communist parties which have been staunch backers of the Palestinian cause since the height of the Cold War. Anti-riot paramilitary soldiers blocked the protesters, who included women and students, but the rallyists changed tack and squatted on a street leading to a hotel, now fortified for Sharon's stay. Also in the capital, chief Muslim cleric Syed Ahmed Bukhari led a march of some 2,000 Muslim protesters from the Jama Masjid, India's main mosque. Earlier, police stopped activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from marching on the Rajghat tomb of Indian freedom champion Mahatma Gandhi ahead of Sharon's trip to the barricaded mausoleum. The CPM argues that since Gandhi was an apostle of peace, Sharon had no right to pay homage there. But before meetings with senior Indian officials began, Sharon placed a wreath and sprinkled rose petals on the Gandhi memorial. During his three-day visit, the first by an Israeli leader since diplomatic ties were established in 1992, Sharon hopes to seal the 1 billion US dollars sale of an advanced airborne radar system and other defence, trade and technology deals. In Kashmir, at least 1,000 demonstrators marched through Srinagar. India and Israel signed six agreements yesterday to strengthen educational, environmental, medical and cultural exchanges, and to work jointly to combat drug trafficking and terrorism. Vajpayee and Sharon met alone for 40 minutes and then with aides, said a ministry of external affairs spokesman. **Arab League expresses 'worry' over Sharon's visit to India*** Arabs hope that India will not abandon its traditional support for Palestinian self-rule during the visit of the Israeli prime minister, the head of the Arab League said on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters after a meeting of Arab foreign ministers, Secretary-General Amr Moussa said he hoped India wouldn't back Israel in a way that helps Israel escalates its killing and destruction to the Palestinian territories. "Of course we can't tie any country's hands, (whether) to receive a certain official or not," Moussa said. "But we hope India will remain sincere to its relations with Arabs and not give support to an aggressive country, an occupier, who rejected peace." "We are expecting more than that from India," Moussa said. At the same news conference, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said Indian officials assured him that they would abide by their "traditional stance ... and would support the Arab rights, including support for a just and comprehensive settlement." **PHOTO CAPTION*** Mahmoud al-Zahhar.
