China Quake Kills 10, Injures 34 in Northwest
An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted China's northwestern region of Xinjiang on Monday, killing at least 10 people and destroying 700 homes, state media and the Xinjiang seismological bureau said. The tremor hit Zhaosu county, on the border with Kazakhstan, at 9:38 a.m. (local), official Dai Xiaomin said. The official Xinhua news agency said the quake also injured 34 people, toppled 700 homes and damaged another 140. Earthquakes are common in the rugged northwestern Chinese region.
