Three Palestinians Killed as Islamic Jihad Vows to Continue Resistance against Israel
Three Palestinians were killed overnight Friday by Israeli troops in two separate incidents in the Gaza Strip. In one incident, Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian in the Gaza Strip on Friday night, an army spokesman said. The Palestinian was later identified as 16-year-old Jihad al-Akhras, 16, of the Rafah refugee camp. The shooting took place near the southern Gaza town of Rafah, an area where Palestinian activists and Israeli soldiers clash almost daily. Elsewhere, occupation troops shot and killed two Palestinians, armed with grenades and an explosive device, crawling toward a security barrier separating the Gaza Strip from Israel, military sources said Saturday. Meanwhile, the Gaza Strip office of the Islamic Jihad issued a statement early Saturday morning declaring that the group would not join any truce and vowing fresh attacks on Israel. The communique seemed to contradict earlier reports of progress made by Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian factions engaged in the Cairo talks. "We remain committed to the choice of resistance as a strategic [one] to...dismiss the occupation from our land," said the statement issued by the Islamic Jihad military wing. "We will not abide by any agreement or any dialogue that will abandon these principles...and our painful reaction in the heart of [Israel] will not be delayed," the statement added. The group said fresh attacks would serve as revenge for Israeli operations and the expulsion of 12 Palestinians from the West Bank to the Gaza Strip on Thursday. Meanwhile, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei was set to arrive in Cairo on Saturday, for the final stage of talks between Palestinian factions and Egyptian representatives aimed at reaching an agreement on a cease-fire with Israel. **PHOTO CAPTION*** An Israeli tank blows exhaust next to the body of Jihad Al Akhras, 17, lying on the spot where he was shot Friday evening by Israeli troops next to the crossing passage to Egypt in the Rafah refugee camp, southern Gaza Strip Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003.
