Egyptian Airliner Crashes into Sea, 141 Passengers Dead
An Egyptian charter plane has crashed into the Red Sea, killing all 141 passengers and crew on board, Egyptian aviation officials say. The plane, belonging to Egypt charter company Flash Airlines, crashed shortly after take-off at 0244 GMT from the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. Most of the passengers were French tourists. Wreckage has been found in the sea about 15 kilometres (nine miles) south of the resort, officials said. The emergency services were alerted when the plane, a Boeing 737, disappeared from radar screens shortly after take-off. The crash comes amid increased alerts about possible terrorist threats that have led to tightened security and cancelled flights around the world. But an initial statement from the Egyptian aviation ministry in Cairo said the crash was probably an accident. The weather was clear in Sharm el-Sheikh, airport officials said. Sharm el-Sheikh is a popular Red Sea tourist resort that also often plays host to political and economic summits. A UK Government spokesman told the BBC that Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is on a family holiday in the Sharm el-Sheikh area, was safe and well. Reports said Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was due to meet Mr Blair there on Saturday.
