Four Killed as Rebels Seize Town in Haiti
Rebels seized control of a key town in Haiti, burning a police station and emptying its prison in clashes which left four people dead. The violence, unleashed by the "Cannibal Army", rid Gonaives of the last vestige of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's authority over the town. The gun battle was the bloodiest confrontation between the authorities and protesters calling for Mr Aristide's resignation in months of discontent which has paralysed the Caribbean country, the poorest in the Americas. The attacks were "terrorist acts undertaken by the armed wing of the opposition", said a government spokesman. "The police will have to take measures to re-establish order." Much of Gonaives became a no-go area for police after the murder last autumn of Amiot Metayer, head of the Cannibal Army. His supporters blamed Mr Aristide's forces. The town's slums have been ringed by barricades ever since. Metayer had been a local ally for Mr Aristide but relations between them worsened. His corpse, when recovered, was reportedly missing its eyes, brain and heart. A former priest, Mr Aristide was Haiti's first democratically elected leader, but was toppled by a coup in 1991. He returned with the help of the US military three years later. The opposition has accused him of using terrorism and armed gangs to retain power. **PHOTO CAPTION*** The body of an alleged police informer burns in the streets after he was attacked by armed opponents of the government in Gonaives, 62 miles, 100 kilometers north of the capital Port-au-Prince, Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, a day after an armed opposition group took control of Haiti's fourth-largest city in the biggest uprising yet aimed at the overthrow Aristide.
