Plane Crashes in UAE - 40 Dead
Dozens of people have been killed after an Iranian plane crashed in the United Arab Emirates. Government sources say around 40, mainly migrant workers, were onboard the aircraft, 38 died on impact, another two died in hospital. There are reports of survivors, but so far they are unconfirmed. The plane came down near Sharjah airport in the Gulf State as it attempted to land at 07:00 GMT. Rescue workers scrambled to the scene and retrieved bodies from the badly burnt aircraft. According to Iran's Aviation Authority, the aircraft was being operated by Kish Airline which runs domestic and some short-haul international routes to and from Iran's Kish Island in the Gulf. An official from the company said the plane was Dutch made. It is unclear what caused the accident, investigations will begin shortly. **PHOTO CAPTION*** United Arab Emirates rescue workers surround an Iranian Kish Airlines aircraft which crashed as it came in to land at Sharjah, February 10, 2004 killing 40 of the 45 mainly migrant workers and crew on board.
