Three Americans Killed in Mosul as Spain Vows to Bring Home Troops
Three Americans were shot dead and two wounded in a drive-by shooting in the northern city of Mosul, the U.S. military said Monday. They were traveling in one car on the eastern side of the city when they were attacked, The AP reported. Meanwhile, at least one US soldier killed and about 20 others wounded in less than 48 hours during operations west of Baghdad, it was reported Monday. The two day sweep in Ramadi on Saturday and Sunday led to the discovery of a few bombs and the detention of some Iraqi resistance fighters. It also resulted in a large number of injuries, Al Jazeera reported. A US military statement confirmed the casualties were from Task Force All American and the US Marines during an operation some 100 kilometers west of Baghdad. "Soldiers discovered and disarmed five improvised explosive devices before they could be detonated and captured seven enemy personnel," the statement said. **Arab City Council Member and Bodyguard Shot Dead in Kirkuk*** Elsewhere, an Arab member of Kirkuk's city council and his bodyguard were shot dead in a drive-by shooting on Monday, Reuters reported. Witnesses said a red car pulled up alongside a vehicle carrying Agar al-Tawil, a Shi'ite Arab council member, and his bodyguard and opened fire. **Spain Vows to Bring Home Troops from Iraq*** Spain's ruling conservatives crashed to defeat in elections, becoming the first government that backed the U.S.-led war in Iraq to be voted out of office. The win by the Socialists over PM Jose Maria Aznar's Popular Party Sunday came amid charges that Aznar made Spain a target for attacks by supporting the Iraq invasion. Spain's incoming prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has pledged to bring home the 1,300 Spanish soldiers in Iraq when their tour of duty ends in July. "The occupation of Iraq is a disaster," Zapatero said Monday. Zapatero added Bush and his main ally, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, need to engage in "self-criticism". "You can't bomb a people just in case" they pose a perceived threat, Zapatero said . "You can't organize a war on the basis of lies," he noted. With 99 percent of the votes counted, the Socialists rose from 125 seats to 164 in the outgoing 350-seat legislature, The AP reported. The ruling Popular Party fell from 183 to 148. On his part, Poland urged other states to keep their forces in Iraq. "Our general position is that everybody there should stay until the situation is stabilised," foreign ministry spokesman Boguslaw Majewski said, according to AFP.
