More Foreigners Killed in Iraq
Two British nationals have been killed while five Iraqi civilians and four US soldiers injured in attacks across the country. In the northern city of Mosul, two foreigners were killed in an attack on Sunday, witnesses said. They said the two bodies were lying in the street beside their burned-out vehicle. "These were British civilians working at the Mosul East power station," said an Iraqi technician at the plant who asked not to be named. "They were on their way to the power station in two cars when they came under fire from attackers with AK-47s. One vehicle was hit," he said. **Drive-by shooting*** Three US soldiers were also seriously wounded in a drive-by shooting in Mosul on Sunday, the US occupation military said. Fighters opened fire from a car on a "US patrol, seriously injuring three American soldiers and setting their Humvee vehicle on fire", a US soldier at the scene said. The incident occurred around 12:15 pm (0915 GMT) in Mosul's industrial zone, he said. In Baquba town, north of Baghdad, a roadside bomb exploded on Sunday wounding five Iraqi civilians, including two children aged 10 and eight, a police officer said. In Baghdad, one US soldier was slightly wounded in a bomb blast against a convoy in west Baghdad, the occupation military said. **Offensive*** Meanwhile, occupation troops continued to conduct "offensive operations" to track down resistance fighters in the region northwest of Baghdad. US troops and Iraqi paramilitary forces sealed off two large parts of Samarra, north of Baghdad, on Sunday, a day after three soldiers were wounded in a roadside bombing in the town. On the political front, Muwaffaq al-Rubaie, a member of the interim Governing Council, said he was due to meet a visiting UN team later on Sunday. Discussions are to focus on holding elections, conducting a census and assembling a caretaker government set to rule when sovereignty returns to Iraqis on 30 June. "I am due to meet with the UN technical team in the afternoon, but it will not be open to the press. It is a closed meeting," he said. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Municipality workers collect remains of a US military vehicle, at the site where a US Marine was killed and several others wounded the day before during clashes with insurgents after Friday prayer in Fallujah 60 km north of Baghdad.
