Amtrak Train Derails in Mississippi, One Dead
An Amtrak train carrying 80 passengers and crew derailed in Mississippi on Tuesday night, killing one person and critically injuring 15 others, authorities said. Train No. 58, the City of New Orleans, jumped the tracks 25 miles north of Jackson about 7:30 p.m. EDT in Yazoo City, Amtrak and Mississippi emergency management officials said. The train with 68 passengers and 12 crew members left New Orleans on Tuesday afternoon and was due to arrive in Chicago on Wednesday morning. Amy Carruth, a spokeswoman for the state's emergency management office, told Reuters in a telephone interview that one person was killed and 15 others were critically hurt. Two of the injured were air lifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, she said. The nature of their injuries was not disclosed. In addition, Carruth said more than 50 people were being treated at the scene for less serious injuries. Amtrak spokesman Dan Stessel said he could not confirm the lone fatality or the exact number of people hurt. The train was operating on tracks owned and maintained by the Canadian National Illinois Central Railroad. The track had a maximum speed of 79 mph but it is not yet clear how fast the train was traveling. The train derailed as it approached a bridge crossing the Big Black River in Mississippi's Delta region. Amtrak trains outside of the Northeast run on tracks owned and operated by freight railroads. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the derailment. The last major Amtrak accident occurred in 2002 when the Auto Train derailed in Florida, killing four people. Track problems were cited by investigators. **PHOTO CAPTION*** In this image from television, an Amtrak passenger train is shown shortly after derailing. (AP/WLBT News via the Clarion-Ledger)
