Seven Die in Indian Poll Violence
Seven people were killed yesterday in separate incidents as election-related violence triggered panic in some parts of India. Suspected rebels of the People's War Group killed three residents in Adai village in Bihar state, said police officer Sanjay Singh. Residents of Adai had defied the rebels' call and cast their ballots on April 20, he said. The People's War Group was also blamed for the killing of a political worker in Andhra Pradesh state. Separately, unidentified attackers hurled a grenade at an election rally of the party governing the Jammu-Kashmir state, killing a civilian and injuring seven others, said Rohit Kansal, a local government administrator. Mehbooba Mufti, president of the People's Democratic Party and the apparent target of the attack, escaped unhurt, he said. Six security officers were also wounded in a grenade attack at a polling station in Srinagar, the state's summer capital. Violence was also reported from the northeastern states. In Manipur, a former police chief was also killed. Two unidentified attackers in Imphal, the state's capital killed L. Jogeshwar said police officer P. Doungel. Jogeshwar had ties to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, he said. **PHOTO CAPTION*** An Indian police officer stands guard at a checkpoint in central Srinagar, India, Sunday, April 25, 2004.
