Three US marines were killed and two wounded when their convoy was hit in a bomb attack in Baghdad early Tuesday, the US military said in a statement.
"Three marines were killed and two wounded when a Marine convoy was attacked with a roadside bomb in east Baghdad at 2:00 am (2200 GMT Monday) on June 29," the statement said.
The US troops were the first killed since Iraq regained its sovereignty from the US-led coalition in a stealthy and rushed ceremony Monday inside Baghdad's sealed off headquarters for the new government and the United States.

At least five people were killed and seven injured in various violent incidents Tuesday on the heels of the handover of power by the US-led coalition to the government of Prime Minister Iyad Allawi.
In Baghdad, two Iraqi attackers were killed in an attack on a police station in the northern part of the city, interior ministry spokesman Colonel Adnan Abdul Rahman said.
The gunfight went on for about three hours after about 20 fighters attacked the police station in the Adhamiya district, he said.
Witnesses at the scene said the gunmen had been surprised by American snipers hiding in a nearby building and that four US tanks and six Humvee armoured vehicles had later joined the fight.
Separately, three US soldiers and one Iraqi were wounded when a roadside bomb went off as a US military convoy was passing near the Canal Hotel on the east side of the city, according to Abdul Rahman.
But the US military were not able to immediately confirm the incident.
In the town of Mahmudiyah, 30 kilometres (20 miles) south of the capital, one policeman was killed and another injured in an attack on police headquarters.
"About 40 gunmen, armed with Kalashnikovs, attacked the police station, but policemen there resisted in a gun battle that lasted about 90 minutes, forcing the assailants to flee," said Abdul Rahman.
The town has seen several attacks over the past few months against police.
In Karbala, 110 kilometers (70 miles) south of the capital, unknown individuals attacked the house of the chief of police with small arms fire, according to a statement from the multinational force.
The officers on guard returned fire and an Iraqi police patrol was sent to the place of the attack. During the exchange of fire, one police officer was wounded as the attackers fled the scene.
In northern Iraq, the chief of one of the police districts in the oil city of Kirkuk escaped an assassination attempt in which his driver was killed and two his guards injured, according to the city's police chief.
"A bomb exploded at 7:45 pm (0345 GMT) in front of the home of colonel Ahmed Mohammed killing his driver and injuring two of his guards," General Shaker Hakim said.
Mohammed was lightly injured in the attack which occurred as he was leaving his home for work.
In Mosul two Kurdish 'peshmerga' fighters were killed and two others injured in the third attack of its kind since Saturday.
Unknown attackers opened fire on the group on Tuesday morning as they were riding in a car in the Karama neighbourhood in the eastern part of the city, according to police officer Ziad Sabri.
