Milosevic Trial Adjourned

Milosevic Trial Adjourned
The war crimes trial of former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic was adjourned, after judges said the whole process had to be reviewed due to his failing health. "The trial chamber is clearly of the view that a radical review of the trial process is needed in light of the health of the accused," presiding judge Patrick Robinson said shortly before the adjournment was made. A doctor's statement read to the court during the short hearing said 62-year-old Milosevic, who has been on trial for two years for charges arising out of the bloody Balkans conflicts in the 1990s, needed immediate rest. "It is absolutely essential that Milosevic rests," Robinson said, quoting from the report, adding the former Yugoslav strongman had extremely high blood pressure. According to the judges, the trial proceedings and even its continuation would now have to be examined. Robinson said the court would make a decision on these issues on Monday or Tuesday. The former Serb strongman faces more than 60 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity for his alleged central role in the wars in Croatia in 1991-95, Bosnia in 1992-95 and Kosovo in 1998-99. For the bloody conflict in Bosnia which left 200,000 people dead, he faces separate charges of genocide, the gravest of war crimes. If convicted Milosevic could be sentenced to life imprisonment. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Slobodan Milosevic opens his defense case at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal in Hague. (AFP)
