Sudan Warns US against Sanctions
Sudan has cautioned the United States and United Kingdom against imposing sanctions on it over the violence in Darfur. SUNA, Sudan's official news agency on Friday quoted Foreign Minister Mustafa Usman Ismail as saying that the harsh measures could lead to another Iraq-like quagmire. "The American and British voices that call for the imposition of sanctions on Sudan are those that dragged the world into the Iraq problem," Ismail said. "I hope that they will not drag the world into a new problem from which it will be difficult to extricate itself and that is the problem of Darfur," he said. The United States had earlier warned Sudan with sanctions unless it took immediate steps to stop the continuing violence in the western Darfur region. **Human disaster*** The conflict in Darfur - raging since last year after rebels took up arms against Khartoum - has killed anywhere between 10,000 to 30,000 people, besides displacing more than a million people. The United Nations says Darfur poses the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Human rights groups blame Khartoum for encouraging armed Arab militias to commit atrocities on the region's civilian population. A draft UN resolution, drawn up by Washington, imposes arms and travel bans on the militia leaders and threatens to step up the sanctions within 30 days if results are not evident. Several other countries including UK, Germany and France support the US position. "It appears that there is a conspiracy against Sudan and we must prepare for it and be cautious," Ismail said. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Foreign Minister Ismail sees a conspiracy against Sudan.
