He has been dubbed "the dog boy" and "Mowgli" after the main character in The Jungle Book. Six-year-old Siberian boy Andrei Tolstyk is being reintegrated back into society after being raised by a dog for the past three years. Abandoned by his parents in a house in the middle of nowhere, he was recently discovered by social workers who wondered why he had not been enrolled for school.
"When we first fed him he smelt the food, and then he ate as if he was a dog", said a nurse who is looking after him. Andrei, who has hearing problems, is now learning some basic things such as how to hold a spoon. When questioned about his parents he mimes out his response: it seems his father had a beard and a tattoo and he left him.
Intelligent and a fast learner, the boy is expected to reintegrate quickly, but will probably always have a special bond with dogs.
