Typhoon Kills 63 in Eastern China
At least 63 people have been killed and more than 1800 injured in a powerful typhoon that ripped through eastern China. Provincial officials on Friday said 185 people have been seriously injured. "Initial statistics show that at least 63 are dead and 185 are seriously injured," an official from the disaster relief section of the Zhejiang provincial civil affairs bureau said. Officials also confirmed local newspaper reports that 1800 people had been injured. Another official said at least 15 people were missing and the death toll was likely to rise. "The conditions are very bad and because we are still gathering information this figure is likely to increase," he said. Typhoon Rananim landed in Wenling city on the coast of Zhejiang province, about 135km south of Shanghai late on Thursday, causing widespread damage. Local newspapers reported that 18,300 homes had collapsed. **PHOTO CAPTION*** A Chinese meteorologist points out the location of Typhoon Rananim as it approaches the east coast of mainland China during a briefing at a broadcasting centre in Shanghai, China.
