Palestinian Prisoners on Hunger Strike
More than 1500 Palestinian prisoners in four Israeli jails have begun a hunger strike to highlight their treatment. Held at the Nafha, Saba, Hadarim and Shatta jails, the hunger strikers listed numerous grievances on Sunday morning. Aljazeera's correspondent in Palestine, Shireen Abu Aqla, reports: "Some of the demonstrators' top demands are an end to strip searches and the removal of difficulties imposed on families who wish to visit relatives. "Other grievances include the financial punishments imposed on prisoners and their medical treatment," she added. A press conference is to be held later on Sunday in Ram Allah to publicise a series of solidarity actions in various Palestinian cities. Aljazeera's correspondent reports that Israeli authorities have responded to the strike by closing the jails' canteens, cancelling family visits and stopping drinking water supplies. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Palestinians from all age groups are held in Israeli prisons.
