Italy Launches Emergency Measures to Cope with Soaring Heat

Italy's introduced emergency procedures to protect the frail and elderly from a heatwave that has been linked to dozens of deaths.

Announcing the measures, Health Minister Francesco Storace called on everybody to make frequent checks on those who could be at risk.

"This initiative is necessary because we're very alarmed by this situation. As far as we know, this is an extraordinary situation and after the 2003 heatwave we must intervene to avoid negative consequences for the population," he said.

The north of the country has been worst hit. In the city of Turin yesterday temperatures rose to 40 degrees Celsius.

Authorities estimate the number of heat-related casualties could double normal figures.

France and Spain have also begun to introduce preventative measures to avoid a repeat of the tragedy caused by the heatwave two years ago.

Warnings have also been issued across Britain and Portugal.

Health experts say it is important for everyone to drink plenty of water, use sun block and keep a regular diet to avoid dehydration and fatigue.
