She wants to deliver normally after 2 caesarian sections
Fatwa No: 196341

Question

Salam alaikoum, There is a woman I know who has 2 children, masha allah and is pregnant with her 3rd child. Her first 2 children were delivered by cesarean section. She has found a doctor who supports her having a normal birth despite the fact that she has had 2 cesareans. The doctor said the risk of uterine rupture is about 1% after 2 cesareans. But, this woman has decided to put her trust in Allah and make dua for a normal birth and healthy child. From an Islamic point of view, is this permissible for her to do so or is this considered being reckless as the risk is quite low?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

It is the specialist and trustworthy doctors who make decision in such matters. In general, they do not advise a means that would greatly harm a woman at the time of delivery. Therefore, if this female doctor is experienced and trustworthy, and she advised that woman to have a normal delivery, then it is permissible for her to act upon her advice.

The fact that there is such a percentage of risk does not have any effect on the ruling. The preponderant benefit takes dominance over a minor potential disadvantage.

Indeed, it is very rare that doctors carry out a surgical operation without any percentage of risk.

Allaah Knows best.
