Question

Assalaam u A'laikum, Brother. I just want to know that what is the sunnah of Prophet(peace be upon him) about 'TIME GAP' between Athan and Iqamah other than Maghrab Prayer. Jazzak Allah Khair. Wassalaam.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

With regard to the time between the Athaan and the Iqaamah, it is recommended in the Sunnah to do the following:

1. Perform supererogatory prayers, for the Hadeeth: “Between every two Athaans (i.e. Athaan and Iqaamah) there is a prayer, (he repeated this twice then said:) for whoever wishes to perform it.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

2. Supplicate, for the Hadeeth by Anas who narrated that the Prophet said: “The supplication between the Athaan and the Iqaamah is answered.” [An-Nasaa’i and others, and Ibn Hibbaan graded it as Saheeh (sound)] Another Hadeeth reads: “When the caller (i.e. the Mu'aththin) calls the Athaan, the gates of heaven are opened and the supplication is answered.” [Al-Haakim narrated it in AL-Mustadrak and he graded it as Saheeh, and Al-Albaani agreed with him]

3. Perform the regular Sunnah prayers before the Fajr and Thuhr, which are the two Rak’ahs before the Fajr prayer and four Rak’ahs before the Thuhr prayer. There are famous Ahaadeeth clarifying the regular Sunnah prayers.

4. Perform four supererogatory Rak’ahs before the ‘Asr prayer, for the Hadeeth which reads: “May Allaah have mercy on a person who prays four Rak’ahs before the ‘Asr prayer.” [Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi]
