Criteria to recognize the allies of Allaah
Fatwa No: 25852

Question

Nowadays, there is a person who claims to be a Waliyy (ally) of Allaah The Almighty and an inheritor of the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. He claims that he communicates with the angels and that he possesses supernatural powers given to him by Allaah The Almighty. Is this correct? Who are the righteous allies of Allaah The Almighty nowadays?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds.  I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The allies of Allaah The Almighty are mentioned in the Quranic verses in which He The Almighty Says (what means): {Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allaah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. Those who believed and were fearing Allaah.}[Quran 10:61-62]  Fearing Allaah The Almighty involves obeying His commands and avoiding all that He prohibited secretly and publicly.

Supernatural abilities and inspiration are not the criterion for distinguishing the allies of Allaah The Almighty from the allies of Satan. However, the criterion lies in steadfastness on the revealed laws of Allaah The Almighty in terms of belief, acts of worship, dealings with others and behavior. Thus, a person who is steadfast on these things and fears Allaah The Almighty inwardly and outwardly is His ally. In fact, steadfastness [on Islam] is the greatest gift that Allaah The Almighty confers on a person, and divine inspiration, which he may enjoy, does not necessarily mean that he is the best of people or even that he is better than others. Indeed, a person who is lesser in merit may have things that do not happen to one who is better. However, Satanic inspirations occur to the deviants, soothsayers, religious innovators and those who deal in fraud.

This is the criterion, and Muslims should not occupy themselves with ‘inspiration’ which is not based on practical action in the Sharee‘ah. Allaah The Almighty perfected the religion of Islam. He The Almighty Says (what means): {This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.}[Quran 5:3]

Moreover, scholars concluded that inspiration is not a source of legislation.

On the other hand, a person who wants to be an inheritor of the Prophet must be a pious, purified and God-conscious scholar. The Prophet informed us that scholars are the inheritors of the prophets, and that the prophets leave neither Dinaar nor Dirham (meaning, leave no money), they only leave knowledge, and whoever takes it is the fortunate one. [Ahmad, Abu Daawood, An-Nasaa'i, At-Tirmithi and Ibn Maajah]

Finally, the allies of Allaah The Almighty, namely, those who believe and fear Him, are to be found everywhere at all times.

Allaah Knows best.
