Prohibition against combing hair everyday does not apply to women Fatwa No: 291727
- Fatwa Date:20-4-2015
As-salaamu 3laikum. In one of your fataawa you mentioned that a person should not comb his hair more frequently than every two days. Does that apply to women or just men? I comb my hair a few times a day because it is quite thin and if I don't do that, it gets messy quickly and I'm worried it could be displeasing for my husband. Jazaakum Allahu khair
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Perhaps you are referring to Fatwa 91204, which mentions a Hadeeth from ‘Abdullaah ibn Mughaffal : the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, forbade combing the hair except every other day.” [At-Tirmithi - Al-Albaani classified it as Saheeh (sound)]
What is meant by this prohibition is that it is disliked. Some scholars interpreted it as applying to both men and women, but they considered the dislikedness for women to be more lenient than for men; and some of them interpreted it as applying to men only and not to women, because of women's need to beautify and adorn themselves for their husbands at all times. This view is the closest to soundness.
Shaykh ‘Abdul Muhsin Al-‘Abbaad, may Allaah protect him, was asked about this Hadeeth as in his commentary on the Sunan of Abu Daawood: “Are women included in the prohibition of combing their hair every day? He answered: This prohibition does not apply to women, because with regard to women, this consists in beautifying themselves for their husbands, and they may beautify themselves for their husbands at all times.”
Allaah Knows best.
