Sharing an apartment with non-Muslims Fatwa No: 293032
- Fatwa Date:15-5-2015
As salaamu alaikum, Dear Sir, I live in a flat in which our neighbor are hindus but no women only bachelors in which we have a common bathroom sharing bathroom with non Muslims is it prohibited, as iam a good practicing Muslim thank you regards.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
We congratulate you for being a good practicing Muslim.
It is not prohibited for you to live side by side with non-Muslims as long as they are peaceful and there are no women among them. We advise you to be keen on trying to guide them and to treat them kindly. Allaah may guide them to Islam because of you.
The Muslims are enjoined to show kindness to their neighbors, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, given the general indication of the verse (that means): {Worship Allaah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allaah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.} [Quran 4:36]
Moreover, it was reported that a sheep was slaughtered in the home of ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr . When he came home, he asked his household, "Have you given a gift from it to our Jewish neighbor, for I heard the Messenger of Allaah say: 'Jibreel (Gabriel) kept on telling me to be good to the neighbor until I thought he would make him one of my heirs?'" [At-Tirmithi - Al-Albaani graded it Saheeh (sound)]
Please refer to Fatwa 86596 about the preference of not living with non-Muslims in the same residence; and Fatwa 83471 about the limits and rules governing living with non-Muslims in the same place.
Allaah Knows best.
