Full body waxing for men and women
Fatwa No: 366133

Question

Is one allowed to full-body wax themselves, whether male or female?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

There is nothing wrong with that (full-body waxing) if the hair that is removed is not forbidden to remove in Islam, such as facial hair.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen was asked the following question in Fataawa Nurun ‘ala ad-Darb, “There is a substance used by women in removing hair from the arms and legs in order to beautify themselves for their husbands; it is a paste made of sugar and lemon, prepared over fire; is this permissible?”

He replied:

It is more appropriate for a woman not to remove the hair on the arms because the hair of the body is divided into three categories:

A category that we are ordered to remove by the Shariah, so it should be removed, such as the pubic hair and the hair of the armpit. One shaves the pubic hair, whereas he plucks the hair of the armpit if it is not difficult to do so.

The second category is not permissible to remove by plucking it out, which is the hair of the face. The Prophet cursed the woman who plucks her facial hair, like the eyebrows, even if this is with the intention of beautifying herself for her husband. It is forbidden and not permissible; rather, it is one of the major sins.

The third category: it is the hair regarding which there is no order in the Shariah to remove it and no forbiddance from removing it. So this type of hair is not forbidden to remove because there is no proof on the prohibition, and there is no order to remove it because there is no evidence about removing it. However, it is more appropriate not to remove it because, in principle, what Allah created in the body is to remain as it is unless there is permission to remove it or a command to remove it, so it is according to what is stated in the Shariah, among which is the hair of the arms and legs. It is more appropriate to leave it and not remove it, unless it reaches the extent of a deformity by being too much to the extent of drawing attention, in which case there is nothing wrong with removing it (the hair of the arms and legs)."
