Wearing Shoes Named after a Non-Muslim Player
Fatwa No: 450895

Question

I like to play basketball, and I was looking into buying shoes for it. The issue that I have is that the sneakers that are made for basketball are almost always named after a player that is a non-Muslim. I want to know if it is permissible to buy a pair of shoes like this. The only person I know today that is supposedly a Muslim and has his own shoe that one could buy has produced his shoe with Nike. After reading various fatwas regarding Nike, I have stopped wearing it, so this is out of the question for me. I enjoy playing basketball because it is good exercise and I find it fun, but I don’t want to risk an injury if I am not wearing proper footwear.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Naming the shoe brand in the name of a non-Muslim player does not prevent the permissibility of buying them and wearing them as far as it appears.

Allah Knows best.
