Question

I am a 26-year-old man and suffer from hereditary alopecia. I pray and supplicate Allaah Almighty to heal my hair. I give charity according to my ability, acting upon the hadith where the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Treat your patients by (giving out) charity." Are there any specific supplications attributed to the honorable Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, concerning this matter? What should I do? How can I be treated by the Quran? Or do I just have to entrust my affair to Allaah Almighty?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The supplication you make and the charity you give out in order to heal from the disease you suffer from is the correct way to recover. Supplication is the basis of worship, as complying with the statement of Allaah Almighty (which means): {And your Lord Says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you."} [Quran 40:60]

Moreover, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Supplication is (the essence of) worship." He, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, also said: "Treat your patients by (giving out) charity, protect your wealth by (paying) zakah, and prepare supplication against afflictions." [At-Tabarani and Al-Bayhaqi]

Along with supplication and charity, you should seek medication since the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, commanded Muslims to do so when he said: "Seek treatment, for verily Allaah  did not send down a disease without also sending down its cure, which may be known to some people and unknown to others." [Ahmad, Abu Daawood, An-Nasaa’i, At-Tirmithi and Ibn Maajah]

Nevertheless, you must entrust the whole matter to Allaah, the Exalted, knowing that what you suffer from is something that happened according to the Fate and Decree of Allaah Almighty. It is also stated in an authentic Hadeeth that the affair of the believer is all in his favor. If something pleasing happens to him, he is thankful and this is good for him, and if something harmful befalls him, he shows patience and this is also good for him.

As for specific supplications regarding your disease, we have not found any. However, the entire Quran is a remedy and cure to whomever believes in it. Among the supplications of seeking the fulfillment of one's needs is the one mentioned in the Hadeeth where the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was reported to have said:

"Whoever has a need with Allaah or a human being, let him perform the most perfect ablution he can, offer two Rak‘ahs, praise Allaah and invoke peace and blessings of Allaah upon the Prophet, and then finally say: "La ilaaha illallaah Al-Haleem Al-Kareem. Subhaanallaahi Rabb Al-‘Arsh Al-‘Atheem. Wal-hamdu lillaahi rabb Al-‘Aalameen. As’aluka moojibaati rahmatik wa ‘azaa’ima maghfiratik wal-Ghaneemata min kulli birr was-salaamata min kulli ithm, la tada‘ li thanban illa ghafartah wa la hamman illa farrajtah wa la haajatan hiya laka ridha illa qadhaytaha ya Arham Ar-Raahimeen." (There is no deity save Allaah, the Forbearing, the Most Generous. Glory be to Allaah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. Praise be to Allaah, Lord of the Worlds. I beg of You the means of (obtaining) Your Mercy and that which will make certain for me Your Forgiveness, cause me to gain from every righteousness and grant me protection from every sin. O Allaah, Leave no sin of mine unforgiven, no anxiety unrelieved and no need of mine unfulfilled wherewith You are pleased. O You, the Most Merciful of those who show mercy)." [At-Tirmithi and others]

You should know, dear brother, that baldness is a simple matter that happens to many men, without negatively affecting their lives or changing their conditions. A slave should praise Allaah Almighty for not being afflicted with something more serious.

Allaah Knows best.
