Eating inside the Mosque Fatwa No: 82656
- Fatwa Date:28-2-2001
Is there any evidence that states we shouldn`t eat in the mosque?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
There is no evidence proving that eating inside the mosque is unlawful. On the contrary, there is evidence of the opposite. Ibn Maajah reported from ‘Abdullah ibn Al-Haarith that he said: “We used to eat meat and bread in the mosque during the era of the Prophet .”
The companions who were known as Ahlus-Suffah, who were poor people and did not have any place to dwell in except the mosque, used to eat and drink inside it. Moreover, the Prophet lodged the delegation of Thaqeef in the mosque. Besides, the Prophet tied Thumaamah ibn Athaal to a post inside the mosque for three days, and such a period requires one to eat and drink.
No doubt that eating in the mosque or drinking in it should be outside the times of prayer and it should not be something that could harm the worshippers, like onion and garlic.
