Mother Preventing Her Teenage Son from Going to the Mosque
Fatwa No: 456994

i am 16 teenage still studying living with my parents in a area close to a masjid but when I try to go to pray in the masjid my mother stops me calling me extremist and shaming in front of some my other family relatives and since she has a nervous disease she gets angry and falls to the ground and can even go to a coma just because I wanted to pray in the masjid what should I do ?

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

You should talk to your mother kindly and gently, and edify her on the fact that praying in the mosque has nothing to do with religious extremism and is rather an act of Sunnah in compliance with the guidance of the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. You may ask your father or your rational relatives to intervene and advise her to give up rigidity in this regard. Afterward, you should follow a middle course and pray in the mosque whenever possible if there is no harm incurred to her.

If you could not pray in the mosque, you bear no sin because praying in the mosque is an act of Sunnah, but you have to pray in congregation at home with some of your family members, even with your mother, may Allah guide her. You may pray in congregation at home and there is nothing wrong with that; you will not bear sin for praying at home whenever your mother would be angry at you for going out.

Allah knows best.
