Giving money for Hindu celebrations Fatwa No: 82713
- Fatwa Date:1-4-2001
I work in a semi-govt. organization in Bombay, India. I work as a supervisor and Electrical Engineer by profession. My problem is that with me there are majority (90%) Hindus working in the organization and they demand money for celebration of their festivals consisting of Puja (worship of idols of their gods) and party. But if I refuse them then they will harass me and my other three/four Muslim brothers. So can I pay give money if it is used for Puja and party as well? Please tell me the answer in the light of Qur'an and Sunnah?
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
As a general rule, it is not permissible for a Muslim to provide any assistance or support for non-believers feasts celebrations or other religious ceremonies. He should not participate in such occasions with his money or with any other thing. But if a Muslim is in a weak position and if by his refusal to give something he faces physical or economic harms, then he may give something to avoid expected harms.
Moreover, you and every Muslim is obliged to join hands with other Muslims and spare no efforts to avoid donating money or any other thing on the mentioned occasions.
Allah knows best.
