Japanese Muslims Seeking Islamic Education for Children
Fatwa No: 83605

Question

My wife and I are writing this letter, as we are highly concerned about the Islamic upbringing of our two boys, who are 8 and 10 years old. We live in Japan, and there are no Islamic schools for that age, so the children are attending normal Japanese schools. Our concern is that the children spend most of the day among non-Muslim children and the school curriculum is Japanese. Additionally, the Muslim community in Japan is dispersed throughout the country, which makes it very difficult for us to interact with other Muslim families. What we would like to ask is if you could suggest to us any good Islamic schools around the world where we could safely send our children to study, and those schools have dormitories. We can afford to pay the cost of tuition and accommodation. The children have Japanese citizenship, and will have no difficulty in obtaining a visa.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

We do not know any Islamic school that teaches children at this early age. The education of your children should be under your close supervision and we advise you to do the following:

- If you can migrate from this country to a Muslim country without facing much hardship, then do so in order to educate your children in the best way. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 81642.

- If you are unable to migrate, then we advise you to seek the help of any available Islamic center (a Sunni center that is known for its teachings with the right Islamic Sharee’ah).

We ask Allah to guide you and us to the right path and make us all memorize the Quran and apply its teachings in our lives.

Allah knows best.
