Muslim Woman Marrying a Non-Muslim Man Fatwa No: 84265
- Fatwa Date:2-6-2002
Is it ok in Islam for a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man? In what circumstances is it alright?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
According to the consensus of Muslim scholars it is forbidden to marry off a Muslim woman to a non-Muslim man. The suitability in the religion is the main condition since marriage provides the husband custodianship of his wife. Allah Says (what means):
• {And never will Allah grant to the disbelievers a way (to triumph) over the believers.} [Quran 4:141]
• {And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they believe. And a believing slave is better than a polytheist, even though he might please you. Those invite [you] to the Fire, but Allah invites to Paradise and to forgiveness, by His permission.} [Quran 2:221]
If a Muslim woman marries a non-Muslim man, the husband and wife must separate, and she should not permit him to enjoy her since the marriage is not lawful.
