Wearing neckties of silk Fatwa No: 84331
- Fatwa Date:16-6-2002
Is it ok to wear neckties that show a tag reading 100 percentage silk when most of the material is synthetic silk?
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
If neckties are made of pure silk, then it is Haram to wear them. Abu Dawood and al-Tirmizi reported with a good chain of narrators from Ali (Radiya Allahu Anhu) that he said: "I saw the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) holding silk by his right and gold by his left, and then, said: "These two things are Haram for males of my Ummah" . In Ibn Majah 's narration: "and Halal for its females" .
If such neckties are made of rayon; then there is no objection to wear them. If these ties are made of mixed materials of silk, cotton, wool, linen and so on, but silk constitutes the largest quantity of such mixed materials, then it is also Haram to wear them.
Scholars of Islam legalized a small quantity such as to brocade a dress with some threads of silk near the pocket, sleeves or train. The rule is that such embroidery should not exceed an area of four fingers (eight cm.) in one place or more.
Here, I find it necessary to reassure that silk means the very fine, soft lustrous fiber produced by a silkworm.
As for rayon, it is excluded from Shari'a ruling stated above.
Allah knows best.
