Jumu'ah Sermon Du'aa’ Is Sunnah
Fatwa No: 85371

Question

Assalamu Alaikum. Please advice me on the Du'a which is asked by the Imam at the end of his khuthuba during Jummah prayers. Istn this the same as asking Du'a in chorus. Wassalaam.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Making Du'aa’ (supplication) in chorus after prayers is an innovation as it contradicts the Sunnah of Prophet Mohammed and his Companions . As for the Du'aa’ of the Imam during the Friday sermon and the fact that the people praying with him say Ameen, it is Sunnah. The only disagreement is over the issue of whether the praying Muslims in this situation say Ameen loudly or quietly, and whether they should raise their hands during Du'aa’ or not.

The most preponderant opinion is that the praying people say Ameen quietly and that neither the Imam nor the people praying with him should raise their hands during Du'aa’. However, it is Sunnah for the Imam to raise his forefinger while supplicating as the Prophet used to do so.

Allah knows best.
