Conferring Blessings upon Things/Beings We See
Fatwa No: 85777

Question

How should we bless when we see a thing, or some beautiful person or women (Muslim or non-Muslim)?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Al-Haakim reported from Sahl Ibn Hunayf that the Prophet said: “Whenever one of you sees something that appeals to him he should ask Blessings (from Allah on that thing).” Imam Malik also reported this same Hadeeth with different wordings.
Ibn Abd al-Barr said in al-Tamheed: “Tabreek (seeking blessing) is when the speaker says: “O Allah bestow blessings on him/it and the like.” It is also said that Tabreek means saying: “Allah, The Best of all Creators, bestow blessing on (him/her, it …).

So, there is no objection to using the above expression, or any other expression that carries the same meaning.

On the other hand, we would like to call your attention to the fact that it is unlawful to look deliberately to non-Mahram women as this is a source of temptation. Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet said: “Allah has decreed for every son of Aadam his share of Zina which he will inevitably commit. The Zina of the eyes is (unlawful) looking, the Zina of the ears is (unlawful) listening, the Zina of the tongue is (unlawful) speech, the Zina of the hand is (unlawful) gripping, the Zina of the leg is walking (to places where a person intends to commit immorality), the heart yearns and desires, and the (person through his) private parts may or may not put that (desire) to effect.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

So, if someone looks accidentally at something forbidden, he should immediately turn his sight away. Muslim reported that Jareer said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah about the unintentional glance [at a non-Mahram woman], so he ordered me that I divert my sight.

What we mentioned here about women also applies to handsome good looking boys (who are beardless and have no moustache).

Al-Bayhaqi said in his Sunan: “It is dislikable to look at handsome beardless boys.

Allah knows best.
