Smoking and purification
Fatwa No: 86874

Question

If I am with Wudu, and I smoke cigarette, should I make another Wudu for the prayer or recite holy Qur'an?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

The ruling about smoking was made clear in Fatwa: 85089. On the other hand smoking is not among the nullifies of Wudu. So, if you make Wudu, then you smoke, you do not need to re-do your Wudu. But we advise you to immediately quit this bad habit and repent from what you did before.

As for reading Qur'an, it is recommended that the mouth from which Qur'an comes be clean and smell nice. Indeed, the smell of smoke makes the mouth disgusting. Al-Bayhaqi reported from Samurata that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Clean your mouths with Siwak (tooth stick) as they are the route of the Qur'an."

Allah knows best.
