Price of silk ties
Fatwa No: 87475

Question

I want to ask about the silk ties we have these days. Their labels say they are silk, but they are priced at a maximum of about 30 to 40 dollars, which is not the real price of silk.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

If those ties are made from pure natural silk, then it is Haram to wear them.

The evidence is in what Abu Dawud and Tirmizi reported with a sound chain of narration that Ali (Radiya Allahu Anhu) narrated that he saw the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) taking a cloth made of silk and he put it in his right hand, then he took another piece and put it in his left hand, then he said: "These two clothes made of silk are Haram for the males of my Ummah”, in the narration of Ibn Majah there is an addition: “but are Halal for the females of my Ummah".

However, if the ties are made from artificial silk, then it is not Haram to wear them.

And if they are mixed with other threads of wool, cotton, linen and other materials and the percentage of silk is greater, they are also Haram, because the rules and examples are deduced according to the predominant and prevailing factor in relation to the Islamic Shariah rules.

Nevertheless, the scholars allowed a very small amount like a label, attached to the cloth.  The same rule applies to a maximum of a 4 finger embroidery in a given cloth be that on its pocket, its sleeves, …etc.  These silk fingers can be in one place or dispersed along the cloth.

There is no difference whether these threads are gathered in one place, or dispersed on the condition that they do not exceed the with of 4 fingers.

Therefore, if you know that this tie is made of natural silk, it is not permissible to buy it or to wear it whether it is expensive or cheap.

Allah knows best.
