Woman's wearing wide pants with a long shirt
Fatwa No: 88041

Question

Please I want to know if I can wear wide pants with a long shirt?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

We believe that pants regardless of their kind and style without a garment that covers it totally, do not fulfill the requirements of the Hijab for a Muslimah.  In this case, it does not cover up the shape of the body and its beauty rather it causes temptation, seduces the opposite sex and inflames erotic feelings. So, she exposes herself to humiliation.

In addition, wearing pants without a full covering garment has never been the dress of chaste Muslim women.  Therefore, it resembles the dress of non-Muslim or dissolute women.  Thereupon, if the shirt is long and loose enough that covers the pants to legs then it is acceptable; otherwise, she may wear the pants only for her husband.

Probably, dear sister, you may apprehend that when Islam sets conditions for the dress of a Muslim woman, it is actually to guard her honour, to protect her from evil gazes and keep her away from all kinds of harassment.

The truth is not what the enemies of Islam claim, i.e. that the Islamic code of dress is a suppression for women.

Surely, you are aware of what has been happening for women in the Western countries such as rape and other kinds of physical harm. The reason is that the Western women have uncovered their bodies, so everyone can look at them and even enjoy looking at their beauty.  Thus they have been facing the troubles that are warning lessons for wise people.

Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {…then whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery. "But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur'an nor acts on its orders, etc.) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and we shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection."} [20:123-124].

Allah knows best.
