May a sinner see the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in a dream? Fatwa No: 8896
- Fatwa Date:30-8-2010
Last week, I dreamt that I was offering prayers in a mosque; after concluding them, I began to read the Noble Quran. While memorizing, I was confused about certain verses and could not locate them in the Mus-haf (printed copy of the Quran), so I asked a man to help me. He beckoned to another individual, identifying him as the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. I then found myself sitting before someone with a thick dark beard.
I am a Muslim who believes in Tawheed (monotheism) and observes all religious duties, praise be to Allaah The Almighty, but I commit minor sins, such as listening to songs and teaching women [without lowering my gaze in a coeducational setting]. Is it possible that I could ever see the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in a dream? Was it a true vision?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Him, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Seeing the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in visions is true [and real], for Satan never assumes his image; also, such dreams are not necessarily restricted to observant Muslims.
This vision may be a warning and [source of] glad tidings for you, so that you abstain from committing the violations you referred to and adhere to the Sunnah of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and his straight path.
You must also be aware that minor sins that are persistently committed, turn into major ones. May Allaah the Almighty protect us all.
And Allaah Knows best.
