Parents object to his desire to marry deaf girl Fatwa No: 90236
- Fatwa Date:23-6-2005
I am in love with one handicapped girl but she is Muslim by birth, she is totally deaf, she prays five times a day, she is perfect in all Islamic way, but the thing is my parents are not accepting this relation because she is deaf that's all, please suggest me what can I do, I am waiting since from 6 years, still I will wait but she is already 25 year old. Know I am thinking to marry her without obeying my parents.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
First of all, it should be noted that the parents should not prevent their son from marrying a woman he wants if she is religious and has a good moral conduct. The Prophet said regarding the type of woman we can consider for marriage: "Choose the religious one, you will prosper." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] The fact that a woman is handicapped or deaf is not a religious obstacle to marrying her; on the contrary, if one marries her, Allaah could bless this marriage and put much good in it, and Allaah may bless her children and they may benefit the entire Muslim nation.
Therefore, if this woman is religious and has a good moral conduct, and you wish to marry her, then you should endeavour to convince your parents. First, you should seek the help of Allaah in doing so, then the help of righteous and pious people and whoever is close to your parents as they might be convinced, and so, you would achieve two benefits: pleasing your parents and marrying the woman your desire.
However, if your parents still refuse, then you have to obey them as it is an obligation to obey your parents within what is permissible, while marrying this particular woman is not an obligation, and one is first required to fulfil the obligation. Allaah may bless you with a woman better than her, Allaah says (which means): {… and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allaah knows but you do not know.}[Quran 2:216].
Allaah Knows best.
