Signs of righteousness Fatwa No: 90276
- Fatwa Date:6-7-2005
What are the apparent signs of righteousness signs that can be witnessed by a believer also within himself?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
A true Muslim is commanded to remain firm upon the religion as Allaah Says, addressing the Prophet Muhammad (what means): {So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to Allaah], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do}[Quran 11:112]
In fact, being steadfast on righteousness is one of the essential requirements that every Muslim must fulfill. A clear proof substantiating this statement is that a Muslim in his daily prayers repeatedly asks his Lord to: {Guide us to the straight path}[Quran 1:6]
A righteous person can be distinguished by the following signs:
1. He always performs obligatory acts of worship such as establishing prayers at their fixed times, treating his parents kindly and keeping good ties with his kinfolks.
2. He always refrains from committing acts of disobedience whether they are major or minor sins.
3. He keeps company with righteous people.
4. He refrains from any innovated practice in religion and any practice that contradicts the creed of Islam.
5. He rushes to doing good deeds.
6. He enriches himself with Islamic knowledge.
7. He bears the burden of spreading Islam and feels responsible for guiding all Muslims to the straight path.
8. He calls people to the way of Allaah.
9. He practices all forms of patience: He is patient on performing acts of obedience, he is patient in refraining from committing sins, and he is patient at times of difficulties and afflictions.
10. He is steadfast on performing the Sunnan (plural of Sunnah) and desirable acts of worship.
In fact, these are not the only signs by which we can distinguish a righteous Muslim.
We should bear in mind that the most remarkable sign of a righteous Muslim is that he always belittles his acts of worship when compared with the bounties and blessings of Allaah.
Another remarkable sign is that the more he worships Allaah, the more he fears Him and loves Him. Moreover, he does not become proud of or lured by his good deeds.
Allaah Knows best.
