The mother’s milk is pure Fatwa No: 91326
- Fatwa Date:20-3-2006
Is the breastfeeding mother’s milk impure? It is permissible for the mother to perform the prayer if her clothes are touched by her milk?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
The mother’s milk is pure according to the consensus of the scholars. Therefore, the milk that touches her clothes does not affect the validity of her prayer. This applies to the breastfeeding mother and others. An-Nawawi said: 'The mother’s milk is pure according to the four schools, and this is their established opinion. This is also the authoritative view of the Shaafi’ee school, with the exception of Al-Anmaati [from the same school] who is of the view that it is impure and that it is permissible for the child to drink it for necessity. This is not a sound opinion and it is a clear mistake. However, this view is reported in order to warn people from exaggerating in its regard. Indeed Shaykh Abu Haamid reported the consensus of all the Muslims that the mother’s milk is pure.'
Allaah Knows best.
