Declaring all Soofis as non-Muslims or dissolute people Fatwa No: 91567
- Fatwa Date:27-3-2006
Is it permissible to declare all Soofi groups as non-Muslims or dissolute people?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger as well as that of his family and all his companions.
Nearly all the Soofi groups today are deviated from the correct path and strayed from the methodology of Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaa’ah. So most of these groups follow innovations and deviations and even commit some acts of worship which takes a person out of the fold of Islam, like calling upon dead people, seeking their help, and believing that the Awliyaa’ (the righteous and pious people) know the unseen and control the universe, and they believe that Allaah is present in every creature. Nonetheless, some people who believe that these sects are doing some good, affiliate to them while not being aware of much of their innovations. Therefore, it is not permissible to declare everyone who affiliates with them as a non-Muslim or a dissolute person, rather each person should be judged according to what he deserves, after the conditions of declaring a person as a non-Muslim or dissolute are confirmed on him, and while there are no other impediments [which prevent from declaring him as such]. One should be very careful in declaring a Muslim as a non-Muslim without right. The Prophet said: "Any man who calls his brother (i.e. a Muslim person) a Kaafir (non-Muslim), it will fall upon one of them.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] In the wording of Muslim’s: “…if it is as he said, otherwise it [his statement] will come back on him.”
Allaah Knows best.
