A new Muslim having poor relations with his non-Muslim children
Fatwa No: 92750

Question

as salamo alaykum. My questions concerns the my relationships with older non Muslim children. Since accepting Islam some years and I recently made hijrah to a Islamic country; one child imparticular has caused me so much grief from lies and treacherous and deceitful acts; does the shari'ah support breaking all contact with non Muslim children who hurt you and fight you for your faith? Jazakum Allahu khayran

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

First of all, all perfect praise be to Allaah, Who guided you to Islam and we ask Him to make you and us firm and steadfast on His Religion until the Day we meet Him. We ask you to endeavour to acquire the means for being steadfast on this religion; means like seeking religious knowledge, performing acts of good deeds and being keen on keeping company with pious and righteous people.

As regards your children, if they are non-Muslims as you mentioned in the question, then it is permissible for you to cut relations with them as (in principle) it is permissible to severe ties with a non-Muslim. The Prophet said: "A Muslim is not allowed to abandon another Muslim brother for more than three days." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] However, there is no brotherhood between a Muslim and a non-Muslim; therefore, it is permissible for a Muslim to cut relations with him (non-Muslim). Nonetheless, if you can be patient with them in order to soften their hearts and lead them to accept Islam, then this is better. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 84029.

Finally, it should be noted that it is forbidden to befriend or have affection towards a non-Muslim; Allaah Says (what means): {You will not find a people who believe in Allaah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allaah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred.}[Quran 58:22].

Allaah Knows best.
